Source: Photographer: Bjrn Christian Trrissen CC License: Quiver Tree Facts The highly attention-grabbing term of Quiver Tree serves as the primary common name for a highly unusual variety of plant. Lower trunk is cracked and has very rough, sharp edges etched in it. It is relatively slow to grow, but it develops a massive, tapering, smooth (up top), papery-covered trunk with several branches topped by sea blue-green leaves. And this is not so much for its yellow flowers, but rather for its sculptural form and fissured golden bark the very bark, incidentally, that was used by the San (sometimes known as the Bushmen) as quivers for their arrows in centuries gone by. Add only enough soil so that the fig’s root ball is level with the soil line, but leave about 2 inches of space between the soil and the rim of your pot to make. O f the more than 100 aloe species that are found in South Africa, the quiver tree is one of the most spectacular. Then backfill the remainder of the pot with potting mix. “Koker” is the Afrikaans word for quiver. This is one of the most striking tree Aloes. Place your fig tree in the pot so it is at the same planting depth that it was growing in its nursery pot. The plant is called a “Kokerboom” and was named as such because some Bushmen and Hottentot tribes used the tough, pliable bark and branches to make quivers for their arrows. In the mean time, you can enjoy a specimen that will eventually branch out and grow a trunk. The quiver tree is one of the most interesting and characteristic plants of the very hot and dry parts of Namibia and the northwestern part of the Cape Province of South Africa. This is a wonderful aloe that can grow into a tree (don’t worry - it takes a hot minute to get there). Needless to say, my copilot was not too happy so I filled the hot water bottle and sent her off to an early 8:00 pm bed time. The wind was so strong we could hardly keep the fire going so we settled on a package of soup mix and an unknown type of sausage/hot dog that we grilled on a fork over the smoking blowing fire, the smoke infiltrating every fiber of our clothing and camper truck. We stayed one night and nearly froze to death in the cold wind that blew through the desert landscape. We departed Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park in SA on the 25th and endured 340 km of bone wracking gravel roads leading us to the Quiver Tree Forest Rest Camp.
